Undergoing a DOT SAP evaluation can feel overwhelming. For truck drivers who haven't passed a Substance Abuse Professional evaluation, there's no need for concern. We specialize in providing clear, effective support for those in safety-sensitive roles, helping you navigate your way back to driving.
You may question the duration of the return-to-duty process. With the resources available from Recovery Awareness, the journey back to duty could be shorter than anticipated. Leverage our resources to expedite your return and get behind the wheel again soon.
When a commercial truck driver or another employee in a "Safety Sensitive" position breaches a DOT drug and alcohol testing regulation, they receive notification from their employer or a medical review officer. To continue undertaking safety-sensitive tasks, this individual is required to successfully navigate through the sap program.
The employee must undergo an evaluation by a certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). This SAP assesses the driver's history of substance abuse, operating under regulations set by the DOT specifically for truck drivers. Based on the findings from the assessment, the SAP will then provide tailored recommendations for education, counseling, or treatment.
Once the employee fulfills the SAP's recommendations, they return for a follow-up evaluation. Successful completion of these recommendations renders the employee "return to duty test eligible," as determined by the SAP. This status then qualifies the employee to undergo the return to duty drug test, which the employer arranges.
The main objective of the Return to Duty Process is to ensure employees can quickly and safely resume their work duties after successfully completing the process.
The employer implements the follow-up testing schedule outlined by the SAP, which may extend from a minimum of 12 months to a maximum of 60 months, initiated after the return to duty test.
Navigating the SAP program for truck drivers and the return to duty process can be overwhelming when faced alone. Recovery Awareness provides details on therapy, counseling programs, and recovery treatments and services, all aimed at supporting you through your SAP evaluation. We extend our support to employees across all DOT modes.

Burton Burt, Recovery Awareness, as your SAP in the FMCSA Clearinghouse (Commercial Drivers Only)
Initial Evaluation in 24-48 hours.
As a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), you occupy a pivotal role—often being the critical (and sometimes sole) decision-maker an employer relies on to determine if an employee should operate a school bus, pilot an aircraft, captain an oil tanker, control a train, manage a subway car, or handle the emergency control valves of a natural gas pipeline. The magnitude of your responsibility towards public safety cannot be overstated!
In this capacity, you do not side with either the employer or the employee. Your primary duty is safeguarding public safety through impartial assessments of employees, guiding them towards suitable education and/or treatment, recommending necessary follow-up testing, and ensuring effective aftercare.
